How long have you been a teacher at WRHS?
At WRHS, this is my seventh year. But it’s my fourteenth year overall.
Who or what inspired you to become a teacher?
Well, I was always really really good at Spanish. I actually had a different Spanish teacher every year from eighth grade to senior year, so I saw a lot of different teaching styles – what I wanted to emulate and what I wanted to avoid. My senior year teacher Mrs. Kach – she was so kind, so passionate about learning the language, and that made me want to teach. Also, I had a Spanish degree and had no idea what else to do.
What is your favorite part about teaching?
The “aha” moments, when someone’s not getting something and the moment something just clicks.
Have there been any important lessons that you have learned throughout your career?
Many – you have to remember that your students are people too, and that everyone has bad days. Also, you don’t have to grade everything you hand out.
Are you involved in any other additional activities at the school or in the community?
I am the co-advisor to the Drama Club with Mrs. Stern. I also am a union leader, and I am involved with the Social Committee. I volunteer when I can.
What is your favorite method of teaching?
Telling stories in the target language. It’s exhausting but it’s fun.
What do you think is an important thing for all teachers to keep in mind?
Don’t take work home with you. It can wait. Family time is family time and work time is work time.
What do you think makes you a good teacher?
I care about my students. I can empathize with their situations and I’m flexible and knowledgeable.
In what way did the pandemic affect you the most?
It made me realize what was essential and what wasn’t in terms of what I was doing in my classes.
