Players and coaches at the Regional raise money to purchase resources that the school doesn’t provide.
The varsity cheerleaders have created many ways to raise money for themselves.
“We sold popcorn and donuts and even did a car wash. We also do a 50/50 raffle at all of the home football games,” said senior Julia Morkunas, a varsity cheerleader.
According to the players, doing fundraisers benefits a team with both the money and the support shown by the community.
“We do a 24 hour run around a track. Sometimes people will join in,” said junior Jasmin Abdella, a varsity wrestler.
The girls varsity soccer players carry out various events at their games to raise money for their team.
“We started doing bake sales at the home games and did a raffle last year. We have raised money, but it hasn’t been the most beneficial toward our program,” said varsity soccer player Aila Head.
The golf team raises their money by working food concessions during the winter sports season.
“We work the snack stand at every home game of the winter sports. The money has really benefited,” said science teacher Nicholas Guerin, varsity boys and girls golf coach.
The money the cheer team has raised has affected the team in a beneficial way.
“All the money goes to the cheer team. Doing these fundraisers has very much benefited the team,” said Morkunas.
According to student athletes, the school provides them with uniforms, but are not very helpful with other wants of the athletes.
“It would be useful to have a camera so we can film our games and watch them back. Watching our game back can help increase our soccer IQ and increase our game play,” said Head.
Varsity golfers said they have used the money they raised to purchase bags and additional tee times.
“The money we raise makes up a bulk of the golf team’s funding,” said senior Vince Palumbo on the varsity golf team.
The wrestling team uses the money to further improve their competition and winnings.
“We raise money to play in higher level tournaments and country wide tournaments,” said Abdella.
According to senior Remy St. Germain, the boys varsity soccer team has more equipment, but it wasn’t provided by the school.
“Our coach bought our camera and merchandise with his own money,” said senior varsity soccer player Remy St. Germain.
Many student athletes agree that higher quality gear improves play and participation, ultimately benefiting the sports of Wachusett Regional.
