Mr. Brewer is not only a teacher at Wachusett but also a veteran, and throughout his interview he was able to expand on why he joined the army as well as his experiences.
When asked to explain what influenced him to join the army, Brewer responded “I didn’t have any money to get into college,” and further elaborated by saying, “And probably because my Dad was in the Army, that was a bit of an influence.”
Throughout his time deployed Mr. Brewer earned the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Army National Guard, and served two tours in Iraq in a support unit. This helps to speak on Mr. Brewers dedication to protecting his country and how he was able to turn that dedication to teaching.
Brewer elaborated on his time in the army by saying; “Iraq was quite interesting because, for the first time, I had to put my skills to real, practical use. National Guard you go out to the field to train, it wasn’t real. Iraq you had to use everything. I had to apply real skill.”
He further mentions how he was able to form friendships during his time serving.
“Working with my company, and battalion. It was real, real awesome to command and know all those people.” Mr. Brewer’s time in the army allowed him an experience to learn how to work and lead a group, skills that will be helpful for many other things in life.
Having this experience outside of being a teacher has also allowed for Brewer to have conversations with students regarding the military or any other life endeavors.
“I’m always happy to speak on the military with students, I have a lot of good memories and a few that I didn’t like so much, just like everything else in life. It was twenty years of good memories,” said Brewer. His experiences have helped him to build his life to how it is today: a dedicated teacher of 27 years and a veteran who is always willing to help people in need.
