Between the Lines, a modern musical with a mix of a fairy tale and female empowerment.
According to students and teachers, the musical is unknown and modern, but something to look forward to seeing.“I’ve never heard of this musical before. I’m excited to see what it’s about,” said junior Ethan Williams.
Environmental Science teacher Jennifer Drew tries her best to make it to the musicals.
“I go as much as I can, I love to support my students,” said Drew.
According to Sherri Derkazarian, head of music and director of the musical, Between the Lines will see multiple different setting designs.
“This musical spends half its time in real life with the characters and the other half in the fairy tale,” said Derkazarian.
The audition process started nearly right away.
“We found out about auditions not long after the fall play, Peter Pan,” said senior Sophia Jordan.
The audience will see the end result of the cast’s dedication, but the creation process can be more than sometimes expected.
“We are given two song options, depending on the role you audition for. We also have to do a 30 second dance,” said senior Margaret King, who plays the lead role. “We do cold reads, reading the paper and improv with other cast members and callbacks are similar, but the director picks the song.”
The building process of the set can be tedious and time consuming for the tech team.
“We like to reuse our sets, but edit them to fit the musical or play. It takes a long time to get everything finished,” said senior Nora Bronson, a student stage manager and a part of the technical team.
Inspiration for the set comes from research of the musical.
“In order to make the pieces, we have to watch reruns of the musical,” said Bronson.
Costuming is also a complicated process.
“Connecting the director’s vision with my vision and including the students’ vision of what their character is can be a challenge but fun. This year includes a troll, mermaids, fairies, butterflies, a dog plus royals.
King plays Delilah McPhee, the new girl at her school struggling to fit in.
“Delilah has a hard time after her parents’ divorce. Delilah struggled to find friends at her new school and finds comfort in the pages of a book,” said King.
Jordan plays the lead antagonist, Allie McAndrews.
“My character is the school bully and bullies the main character,” said Jordan.
Some students won’t be in the musical, but said they still look forward to it.
“I like going to the musicals and seeing who has been cast and if I know them,” said Williams.
Between the Lines was turned into a musical in 2022 and has a perfect dynamic of old and new.
“Between the Lines uses more modern music for the real life characters and more classic Broadway music for the fairy tale characters,” said Derkazarian.
The musical will be performed in the school auditorium on March 14th and 15th at seven in the afternoon. A third performance will take place at two in the afternoon on March 16th. The tickets can be bought in the administration office or at the door. Student tickets will cost 10 dollars.
