I was honored with the privilege of seeing the behind the scenes effort that goes into the productions at Wachusett Regional High School’s Blitz. Blitz puts a spotlight on the creative outlook of inspiring actors and directors in our WRHS theater community. The cast was very welcoming to me (though I am a little biased due to many of my good friends being performers). A week or so before auditions, a number of students submit scripts they want to perform. This opportunity is open to students of any grade. Theatre Director Mrs. Stern describes Blitz as “between five and six short plays that are written by students, directed by students and performed by students in a very short amount of time.” Typically, the auditions start on a Monday and they perform on the Friday, but things were a little different this year. “We usually cast on Monday and perform on Friday, but this year we cast on a Thursday and performed the following Thursday(4/14) at 6:30.” One of the known Student Directors, Charly Heinrich has submitted and directed several plays. Last year, Heinrich had their performance recorded and submitted towards an Emerson College application. This earned them acceptance and a Comedic Arts Awards—a super prestigious scholarship. Heinrich says, “I’m just super happy because… Blitz really helped me come out of my shell as a comedic performer and writer.” We should definitely direct more attention to such events like this, because it is valuable in uplifting kids, and encouraging them to pursue what they want to do once they go on to getting their degrees.
