On Friday, November 14th, for the third year in a row, Wachusett hosted its fall Job Fair during all four lunches in the auditorium hallway.
“The job fair gives students more exposure to local businesses and job opportunities,” said school counselor and job fair coordinator Brittany Hanna. “The job opportunities are in front of them so they’re more motivated to ask questions.”
The job fair also makes it easier for students to apply for jobs by learning about building their resumes.
During this time, students spoke with local employers at places like Kidoodles, learned about internship opportunities at All One Credit Union and looked at a variety of positions.
“I think the job fairs are very useful for high school students. They’re also a great opportunity for community outreach,” said senior Bronwyn Daly.
Staff said that the list of advantages students have when speaking to employers at the job fair are endless.
“Having the job fair twice a year provides students with work opportunities at different points in the year,” said principal Michael Pratt.
According to faculty, the job fair can help students navigate the hiring process more smoothly.
“It can be difficult for students to just call places of work and ask if they’re hiring,” said school counselor Lauren Freeman. “The job fair makes it easier for students to speak to employers since they are aware that the employer is hiring.”
When asked about what they were hoping to see at this year’s fair, students claimed they were looking for a greater variety of jobs.
“I want to see more job opportunities that help develop lifelong skills and assist the community,” said junior Haleigh Russick. “Things like animal services and environmental care.”
Some students expressed gratitude for the opportunity, but said they didn’t feel prepared when the day of the job fair arrived.
“I wish I knew more about the job fair. I think it’s a really great resource, but I never know when it’s happening until the day of,” said junior Ryann Doherty.
There was a lot of excitement prior to the job fair, even among the underclassmen.
Prior to the fair, freshman Rahaf Atid said, “I’m looking forward to the job fair. I think it’ll be a great opportunity for me to gain some independence. Having my first job and my own money would be really nice.”
All in all, the job fair was a success and people can’t wait for the next one.
“I’ll definitely be attending the next job fair,” said sophomore Hannah Mills. “I’m really looking forward to seeing how it plays out.”
